Inmates (and Staff) Left to Drown?

While TDCJ played it smart and evac’d some of their inmates in South and Southeast Texas, Galveston county made the decision to keep 1,000 inmates and county jail staff on the island.

The structure was specially designed to withstand hurricanes, Maj. Tuttoilmondo noted.

OK…but what about a 20 foot surge?

They seem to be blaming “security reasons” for the lack of action; however, at 10AM this morning, 1,000 inmates were still at the county jail and flooding was already occuring.

Any decision to move the prisoners would be kept secret for security reasons, as happened before Hurricane Rita in 2005, he said.

“We did this during Rita and no one knew until it was absolutely done,” Tuttoilmondo said.

Yes, but this is not Rita, and we’re already dealing with the effects of the storm twelve hours prior to landfall. Where’s the management?

My thoughts are with the inmates. Let’s hope Galveston County does something–at the very least to protect their staff, if not the inmates (sarcasm). Either way, these are humans we’re talking about.
