Who To Blame? The Republinuts, That’s Who!

Ratcliffe and Sharrer have in article in MYSA.com regarding the blame game that is going on in Austin. Of course, in theory, each side can bring up what the other side did to lay the blame. But nothing is as hilarious as this Republican Line:

“We did spend five days asking meaningless, pointless questions about butterflies, cold remedies and Christmas trees when we could have been working on clean air and access to health care,” said Chairman Brian McCall, R-Plano, whose committee set the voting bill for House debate.

That’s right folks, the Chair of the committee that approved the bill to disenfranchise millions of Texans, the same bill which forced Democrats to “chub” and block a vote for it, shoveled that line to the press.

Since when have Republicans been interested in Clean Air and Access to Health Care?

As far as Voter Suppression is concerned, the Republican started this mess.

But Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Houston, said Dewhurst and the Republican senators made the bill the session’s problem by changing their rules for this one piece of legislation so they could run over Democrats to pass it.

“If you want to set blame, you have to start with the catalyst,” Coleman said.

Lalo Alcaraz on Sotomayor

My friend and Cartoonista Lalo Alcaraz posted his editorial comic in commemoration of our first Hispanic and third woman nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court. According to Lalo, it’s a rendition of his youngest daughter.

POTUS and SCOTUS: It’s Sotomayor

OK, sure, I was hoping for a Chicana, but a Puertorriquena is just fine with me. And like hell if I’m going to let Rush Limbaugh dictate on interLatino relations:

“Sotomayor is Puerto Rican, this is going to make the Mexicans and the Cubans angry.”
After all of the attack ads from the right, and even a funny, yet, stereotypical, view of things from Letterman, President Obama has decided to go with Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
Frankly, after seeing that Obama has been very careful as he navigates the immigration issue, I am surprised that he is willing to go through a possible firestorm to get his nominee on the bench. That tells me that she is worth the battle, or, things may be tempered because of her Ivy League background.
There’s no doubt that Sotomayor has the qualifications to be on the bench, so that aspect will not be challenged from the right-wing. But one can expect the “L” word to be thrown around, and I would expect Republican e-mails to go crazy with the whole Latino thing (is she illegal? are her parents illegal? is she an anchor baby?).
Well, ultimately, this is a political message to Latinos: From which political party did the nomination come?
Some say that Bush appointing Latinos to various positions helped him achieve some of his numbers. And let’s face it, in politics (political ads, appointments, and all that), image is everything.
Congrats to Justice Sotomayor. Let the confirmation begin.

From Gov. Goodhair to Gov. Klansman?

Well, it was bound to happen. Some nut-bar anti-Mexican Republinut is running for Governor!

“I want to run for governor because there’s one major problem in this state that no one seems to be addressing, and in of fact they are completely avoiding it, and that was quite evident in this legislative session as well, and that’s the question of illegal aliens in Texas.”

Now, some Democrats may be treating him like a nut. I, on the other hand, can see this guy bringing the nuts from both parties together. Why? Unlike the other nut, Kinky, who was slinging some of his own anti-immigrant BS a couple of years ago, this other nut actually lives for it and is a true believer in his verson of America. When he targets the U.S. Constitution for change, not only is he serious, but he is a real danger to America and Texas.

So, at least in early 2010, this may be a test for Republicans. Are they that nutty?

And if they are nutty enough to make him their candidate, how will Democrats respond? Republican-lite? Just as nutty? Or even nuttier?

License for Torture: 287(g)

Check out this post on Arizona’s Joe Arpaio. Gitmo on our own soil because of 287(g).

Take a look, Mayor White!

Tejano Break: Jay Perez and Mark Ledesma

Here’s some recent footage of Jay Perez and his band. Included is a song performed by Mark Ledesma from David Lee Garza y Los Musicales backed up by Jay’s band. Pretty good stuff. Mark was actually a back-up vocalist for Jay Perez before DLG picked him up. The second video features Jay Perez backed by his former boss, David Lee Garza y Los Musicales. Damn good stuff!

Mattress Mac
It’s never a good day when a major employer (300+ diverse employees) goes up in smoke, but it is especially not a good day when the economy isn’t so great. And it’s not good when one of the best local creditors goes through something like this either. Here’s hoping for a quick comeback for Mattress Mac.

Immigration Politics Ends A Political Career?
It sounds like it. The Mayor of San Angelo gave up a fourth-term as Mayor for love. Casey calls it “honesty” because the lover is “illegal,” as if serving his community while loving someone who is paperless is some sort of crime against the state. I call it horse-shit. The Mayor’s lover isn’t a criminal, he’s just missing a piece of paper.

Voter ID on Saturday
The Texas House is taking up the Voter ID bill. The Texas Dems having been putting up a good fight online. Almost all of the Dems seem to not support it. And those that do should no longer be under the protection of the TDP and their funders.

Immigration Easy to Resolve
My friend Carlos Guerra at the Express-News writes a reality piece on his 21st Century Border blog. The undocumented workers aren’t the problem, it’s “free trade”! Good post.

Gitmo-to-Hutto
Here’s an idea. Release the immigrant families from the Hutto jail and use it to house the accused from Gitmo. Just add a few more fences, some bricks and it becomes a max facility.

Frankly, I’m tired of lib-labs talking about the “stain” that Gitmo has placed on America when we are jailing hard-working non-criminals wanted for civil violations.

Democratic Petition Signing for 2010
There are few Democrats ahead of the game already working on collecting their petition signatures to get on the 2010 ballot for their respective races. Most of them are doing a good job and following the rules, others not so much. So, be aware of whose petition you are signing and the rules. You don’t want to invalidate your signature (and some bad candidate may have you sign his petition after seeing you sign his opponent’s just to invalidate you!). Beware!

DosCentavos will be working on a cheat-cheat of which candidate petition to sign, so you can check them off as you go. We’ve got 65 contested races coming up for the Primary.

Hurtt on 287(g): "It was his (White) idea…"

Chief Harold Hurtt went to Washington and sounded off on the local enforcement aspects of 287(g) that the Houston Police Officers Union and hate group Border Watch support.

Hurtt said the department has applied for 287(g) training for Houston police to use federal immigration databases but only to check on those booked into the city’s two jails.

He said he favors that portion of the program but is opposed to the street-level phase of the federal immigration law, allowing local and state police to make immigration arrests and process offenders for deportation.

The yearlong study of 287(g) by the nonpartisan Police Foundation was critical of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement program, concluding it erodes law enforcement’s public safety mission, diverts scarce resources, increases exposure to liability to charges of racial profiling, and heightens fear in communities.

“Immigration enforcement by local police is counterproductive to community policing efforts. It undermines the trust and cooperation of immigrant communities, could lead to charges of racial profiling, and increases our response time to urgent calls for service,” Hurtt said during a Capitol Hill press event in Washington.

In an interview after the news conference, Hurtt said Houston’s participation in 287(g) was a decision Mayor Bill White made after an illegal immigrant shot Houston police officer Rick Salter while he was serving a search warrant this year.

“The mayor, he was the point man on this. It was his idea, and, of course, he consulted with members of the department,” Hurtt said, adding that he supports the screening in city jails.

Meanwhile, the Mayor’s mouthpiece seems to be narrowing their language.

“The chief and the mayor are in agreement with all this — the mayor agrees with the chief’s comments (in Washington) today, and the chief agrees with participation in the 287 program in the jail,” said Frank Michel, White’s director of communications. “We want to target people who are deportable felons and prey on our community. Neither the chief or the major would see anything inconsistent in that.”

But is this true? From what those of us in the pro-migrant community hear, anyone with a Class C misdemeanor is being targeted for an immigration check. Of course, they are being checked for immigration detainers, which are almost always because of civil infractions of immigration regulations–not criminal violations. So, it would seem that Mayor White needs to clear the air on this whole “deportable felons” line.

Another issue is the cost of such a program. In a time when the City is not in the best financial shape, should the City be in the business of enforcing civil violations? If so, should Mayor White then let the dogs loose on environmental violations, instead of EPA?

Hurtt said joining the jail program will require the assignment of 22 police officers to receive the federal training and cost an estimated $1.5 million to $2 million a year to operate. The chief also said the department pledged years ago it would not allow officers to question residents at random about their immigration status.

“I don’t want my guys out on the street trying to determine which of 32 different visas” an immigrant might be issued is valid, Hurtt said. “I want them to concentrate on keeping Houston safe from thieves, drug dealers, sex offenders, and making sure we maintain the trust and support of everybody who lives in Houston, and that means members of the immigrant community we serve.”

Blankinship from HPOU on the other hand, seems to continue to take marching orders from the Spring-based hate group, Border Watch.

It is quite obvious that Mayor White must cease and desist on 287(g).
