Christmas in Houston: No Latinos Allowed!

The story in the Chron about nonprofits who check for immigration status of children before they hand them a donated toy is not really shocking to me.  Hate comes in all forms, so why should it shock us that some of these nonprofits would believe that an “American” kid should deserve a toy more than an undocumented child?

I guess I have become desensitized.

What is truly bothersome is that Houston Fire Department is affiliated with one of these groups.

The Salvation Army and a charity affiliated with the Houston Fire Department are among those that consider immigration status, asking for birth certificates or Social Security cards for the children.

Unless HFD has a policy of checking the status of anyone who needs their services, then I suggest they distance themselves from that nonprofit.  HFD should not be affiliated with any group who discriminates, since that’s not the type of government we are…and we are all taxpayers.

Now, if we could only convince HPOU to stop hanging out with Border Watch, but that’s for another blog post.

Give to legitimate efforts, such as Navidad En Magnolia, or to Pancho Claus (Facebook Link).  Or to the kids at the Houston Area Women’s Center.
