Derr: We Can Hire Engineers

Thanks to the Chron, the At Large #1 race finally gets some much needed publicity.  Karen Derr and her opponent are  slugging it out on issues that affect Houstonians, with Derr bringing up some very important points about her opponent.

“His support is heavily, heavily weighted with people who contract with the city of Houston,” said Derr, 50, who built a successful residential realty firm focused on the Heights area. She recently sold the company, but still has a real estate license. “My support is very broad-based with people who live in the city, regular folks, taxpayers.”

Derr cites her experience in real estate as having helped her build relationships across the community–an ability that bodes well for constituency-focused council members and voters who expect communication and service from their electeds.

Derr’s opponent has used, as the Chron calls it, his calling card of being an engineer and that Council needs one.  Derr has a response for that.

But Derr dismisses Costello’s calling card: “He keeps saying we need an engineer on City Council, but we can hire an engineer anytime we want. We hire plenty of them and have engineers on staff.”

Sounds like she supports the City’s employees, too!
