Showing Up Helps, Mayor Bill

DosCentavos visited the hard-working folks at the Mexican American Democrats of Texas’ screening of candidates.  Talk about a tight ship–it was quite impressive.  When I walked into the doors of Salon Las Americas in the Oak Cliff area, there he was in all his glory–Farouk Shami, candidate for Governor.

I was soon advised that Bill White, the guy I’ve supported since 2003, would not be showing up, but calling in.  Mexican American Democrats is the oldest Chicano Democratic organization in Texas.  It was formed after the wreckage that became the Texas Democratic Party became a bit more Latino friendly.  MAD has also been one of the premier organizations in North Texas–in large part responsible for Dallas turning blue and increasing Chicano/Latino voter participation precinct-by-precinct.

Needless to say, one would think that a guy running for Governor would take it seriously enough to show up.  Frankly, I was happy that he was at least calling, but the bottom line is that showing up helps.

Although my buddy John wasn’t too happy with the endorsement, MAD’s chief spelled it out in one sentence.

Farouk Shami’s “willingness to sit down and listen, to talk to people about issues that affect us as a group-not only the economy and jobs, but also immigration and crime-led us to make this endorsement.

Showing up is 90% of the effort.
