REMINDER–Luis Gutierrez in Houston!

Actually, in Pasadena.  Congressman Luis Gutierrez will be at the Pasadena Convention Center for a discussion on Comprehensive Immigration Reform.  Earlier this week, President Obama met with Senators  Schumer and Graham to discuss a way to get bipartisan support to push through a CIR bill.  There’s been some optimism from this meeting, but the message must still be sent; whether it is by supporting Congressman Gutierrez, or if you can, head out to Washington DC for next weekend’s March.

Highlights of the CEC

Well, my favorite highlight of the evening was that Julia Maldonado was picked (by her opponent) to be the first place on the ballot in the race for the 308th Family District Court.   Julia being the only Latina we might have on the ballot, it is very important that we lend her all of the support we can muster.  She’s qualified, she’s ready, and she has the life experiences combined with the judicial temperament to effectively serve the people.  There will be more about Julia Maldonado in the future and the significance of her candidacy for Democrats.

We also found out that Borris Miles won back a seat in the Texas House–by only 10 votes after a recount.  Let’s hope this is the last we hear about recounts so we can get back to electing Democrats in November.

The Lie Expanded…

Well, looks like the bigots on the SBOE have prevailed.  They have whitewashed History in their own weird images of grandure, avoided the truth about how underrepresented groups have been treated, etc..

Dr. Jose Angel Gutierrez has a nice quote about the coming political-ethnic shift in Texas:  One side will treat the other as well as it was treated by the other when it was in power.  So, best be nice.

So, much for that.

Over 1500 Bid Farewell to Acordeon-Legend

The Monitor reports on funeral services held today for conjunto music legend Ruben Vela.

An accordion’s sweet melody drifted over Ruben Vela’s casket Friday as some of Tejano’s top stars played his hits to honor the conjunto legend who inspired generations of musicians.

  1. “Julia being the only Latina we might have on the ballot”

I think we have at least two already:

Toni Martinez Ingverson, Harris County Criminal Court #15.

Silvia Mintz, a native of Guatemala, running for HD 132.

There’s also Norma Venso, running for Place 2 on the 14th Court of Appeals, but I’m not sure if she’s Latina or not.

    • Martinez Ingverson is Filipino, I believe. A look at her website shows her inclination to identify as Asian American.

Ingversen is active in the communitiy having served as Presidents of Asian Pacific American Heritage Association, Asian American Bar Association and Asian American Democrats of Texas; Secretary for the Fil-Am Lion’s Club and Phillipine American Chamber of Commerce and currently on the advisory board for the Organization of Chinese Americans.

Nothng wrong with that, and I appreciate the added diversity.l

Mintz is running for a district seat, and not a countywide seat in which Latinos all over Harris County can vote.
