The Media Handbook
The National Council of La Raza is “on it”! The mainstream media now has a media handbook on how to write about the upcoming comprehensive immigration reform debate, how to avoid the use of hate language as news language, and other helpful tips.
This guide is designed to help those interested in the issue to recognize and sort through the charged rhetoric we expect to surface. It catalogues:
• Code words used to demonize immigrants
• Myths propagated to instill fear and anger among Americans
• Spokespeople and commentators who have ties to White supremacy, hate, and nativism
• Organizations with ties to White supremacy that were created to wage a war of propaganda against immigrants and immigration reform
• Allegations spread by many of these same organizations seeking to marginalize NCLR’s voice in the debate and our responses to those allegationsThis handbook is not designed to quell the voices of those we don’t agree with or challenge their right to speak. It is simply intended to educate readers about the backgrounds and agendas of those participating in the immigration debate.

The Lloyd Oliver Saga Ends!
And DosCentavos was right! I had live-tweeted a Friday Coffee at the HCDP HQ which featured Mr. Oliver. Some in the Party were not happy that Oliver was on the ballot despite being accused (not convicted) of barratry. An attempt to have the Party assist Oliver’s opponent (Judith Snively) failed at a CEC Meeting. DosCentavos still believes that a person is innocent until proven otherwise, and after hearing Oliver’s side of the story, I was pretty convinced that he was being railroaded by a GOP-led DAs office. After some errors by the DA which threw out the first indictment, the DA failed to re-indict.
Annoying or not. Like him or not. He deserved his day in court, and he deserved to be judged by voters. Oliver lost (even I voted for Snively), but like hell if a Party should be deciding on who should get support in a Democratic Primary…oh wait…
Congrats to Gilbert Garcia
Congratulations are in order to our soon-to-be Chairman of METRO, Gilbert Garcia. I met Gilbert during the historic mayoral election which got us (thankfully) Annise Parker. In fact, Gilbert was the campaign chairman. He’s a great Houstonian and I’m proud to know him.
