Some Truth for CD-02 and Ted Poe

Ted Poe voted against Health Care Reform, and this is no surprise considering his right-wing, reactionary views against the poor, immigrants, and anything having to do with equality.  The Committee on Energy and Commerce of the U.S. House released this information on how Congressional District 2 will benefit:

In Rep. Poe’s district, the health care reform bill will:
 Improve coverage for 466,000 residents with health insurance.
 Give tax credits and other assistance to up to 157,000 families and 13,300 small businesses to help
them afford coverage.
 Improve Medicare for 90,000 beneficiaries, including closing the donut hole.
 Extend coverage to 100,000 uninsured residents.
 Guarantee that 18,200 residents with pre-existing conditions can obtain coverage.
 Protect 400 families from bankruptcy due to unaffordable health care costs.
 Allow 58,000 young adults to obtain coverage on their parents’ insurance plans.
 Provide millions of dollars in new funding for 4 community health centers.
 Reduce the cost of uncompensated care for hospitals and other health care providers by $91
million annually.

The GOP DOES Support Frivolous Lawsuits

Attempting to rain on our parade, Texas AG Abbott has joined a few states to file a lawsuit against America‘s health care reform bill.  Why?

To … defend our state from further infringement by the federal government…

Because, apparently, AG Abbott wants Texas to secede, too?

This is another one of AG Abbott’s lessons in supporting “frivolous lawsuits” when it suits him.

Reaction from Democratic AG Candidate Barbara Ann Radnofsky:  “Attorney General Abbott is wasting Texas taxpayer dollars on a legal loser lawsuit for his own political, partisan, and personal gain.  His grandstanding does nothing to protect the people of Texas. His aim is to protect insurance companies.   He is promoting Greg Abbott and fundraising for himself[ii] and his party[iii].

The Rio Grande Guardian Reports:

U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa says an additional 255,000 of his constituents will now get health insurance. U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar says an additional 202,000 of his constituents will now get health insurance. And, U.S. Rep. Solomon Ortiz says an additional158,000 of his constituents will now get health insurance

Or as Kanye might say: Greg Abbott hates South Texans!

County Bites–Dynamo Get Their Stadium…

If all goes as planned, the Dynamo will have a stadium in Downtown Houston by 2012. What somehow became a major issue in the 2009 mayoral election, although it seems there was support all around for the facility, seems to be moving toward becoming a reality.

If you all recall, then candidate-Parker was accused of not supporting Dynamo Stadium, but in reality, the County had not yet agreed to throw in their share of the deal.

The city of Houston and Harris County have struck a potential deal on a new stadium for the Houston Dynamo and Texas Southern University’s football team, agreeing to jointly pay for $20 million in infrastructure upgrades if the soccer team follows through with a commitment to foot the bill for the $60 million stadium construction costs.

So, I guess the ball will be on the Dynamo’s side of the field.

I guess the only question left is:  Do we get a Hispanic Museum, too?

He Just Had To Be From Texas…

When I first heard, “Baby Killer!”, the first thing that came to my mind was that I hoped it wasn’t someone from Texas.  Oh, well, Capitol Annex provides us some added information on Congressman Noogieburgers.

Houston’s CIR March

While Health Care Reform is given its due, over 250,000 people marched on Washington, DC in support of Comprehensive Immigration Reform.  There’s no doubt that this must now become the next priority of the Obama administration.

Here are a few photos of the March in Houston’s East End.

The Faces of La Marcha

From my friend Joaquin at SEIU:

Today, on Sunday, March 21 over 5,000 SEIU members from as far as California will descend on the National Mall for “March for America: Change Takes Courage” – an historic immigration rally where tens of thousands of labor, faith, civil rights and immigrant rights activists from across the country will urge Congress to step on the gas and pass comprehensive immigration reform.

Here are just a few members who will be attending the march and rally today:

The Media Handbook

The National Council of La Raza is “on it”!  The mainstream media now has a media handbook on how to write about the upcoming comprehensive immigration reform debate, how to avoid the use of hate language as news language, and other helpful tips.

This guide is designed to help those interested in the issue to recognize and sort through the charged rhetoric we expect to surface. It catalogues:

• Code words used to demonize immigrants
• Myths propagated to instill fear and anger among Americans
• Spokespeople and commentators who have ties to White supremacy, hate, and nativism
• Organizations with ties to White supremacy that were created to wage a war of propaganda against immigrants and immigration reform
• Allegations spread by many of these same organizations seeking to marginalize NCLR’s voice in the debate and our responses to those allegations

This handbook is not designed to quell the voices of those we don’t agree with or challenge their right to speak. It is simply intended to educate readers about the backgrounds and agendas of those participating in the immigration debate.

Good stuff!

The Lloyd Oliver Saga Ends!

And DosCentavos was right!  I had live-tweeted a Friday Coffee at the HCDP HQ which featured Mr. Oliver.  Some in the Party were not happy that Oliver was on the ballot despite being accused (not convicted) of barratry.  An attempt to have the Party assist Oliver’s opponent (Judith Snively) failed at a CEC Meeting.  DosCentavos still believes that a person is innocent until proven otherwise, and after hearing Oliver’s side of the story, I was pretty convinced that he was being railroaded by a GOP-led DAs office.  After some errors by the DA which threw out the first indictment, the DA failed to re-indict.

Annoying or not.  Like him or not.  He deserved his day in court, and he deserved to be judged by voters.  Oliver lost (even I voted for Snively), but like hell if a Party should be deciding on who should get support in a Democratic Primary…oh wait

Congrats to Gilbert Garcia

Congratulations are in order to our soon-to-be Chairman of METRO, Gilbert Garcia. I met Gilbert during the historic mayoral election which got us (thankfully) Annise Parker. In fact, Gilbert was the campaign chairman.  He’s a great Houstonian and I’m proud to know him.

Let’s Keep South Texans Awake!

That is Rick Perry’s border plan. He’s sending choppers to the border.

The statement says the aircraft will fly between Brownsville and El Paso…

What a waste of resources; not to mention the annoyance of South Texas residents having to deal with the noise, and anything else that may come with militarization.

Don’t Vote for the Libertarian…PLEASE!

The Libertarian running against Ted Poe is running on the issue of immigration?  Geez!  And undervote is a vote for our side.  Forget the nuts!

Obama Backs CIR Blueprint

Congressman Luis Gutierrez, who recently visited Houston for an Immigration Reform rally, has agreed to back the Obama health care bill now that President Obama seems to be backing the CIR blueprint that has been devised in bipartisan fashion.

Obviously, President Obama is attempting to do something before tens of thousands of supporters of immigration reform rally on Washington this Sunday.  Still, it sends somewhat of a stamp of a approval to begin the legislative process to get this bill completed, passed, and signed in, hopefully, a timely manner.

The outline calls for illegal immigrants to admit they broke the law, pay a fine and back taxes, and perform community service if they want to get on a pathway to legal status. They would also be required to pass background checks and be proficient in English.

This has been the standard for most immigration bills, including the Kennedy-McCain bill; however, the Republican Party is now on the spot.  How they react to the bill, how they vote on the bill could translate to how viable they will be to Latino voters as an alternative to Democrats; especially in those districts in which surging Latino voter participation made the difference in Democrats gaining ground after 2006.

Other issues on the bill include:

—Giving legal permanent residence to people who graduate with doctoral or master’s degrees from U.S. universities.

—Adopting zero tolerance for illegal immigrants who commit crimes and expanding enforcement of immigration laws.

—Creating a flexible legal immigration system that brings in more low-skilled workers when jobs are available and fewer in a recession.

—Requiring all U.S. workers — citizens and legal immigrants — to get fraud-proof Social Security cards with a biometric identifier.

I would hope that real reform of the citizenship and visa process is included; otherwise, the “back of the line”ers will keep blabbing.

As far as Congressman Gutierrez’s threat of a NO vote on health care, much had to do with what only can be called “restraint of trade” in the banning of undocumenteds from purchasing health insurance under the health care bill. Although immigrants are not banned from buying anything else, including homes and wealth-generating items, they will be banned from buying health insurance with Obama’s health care bill.

This, though, is obviously in line with those states who ban immigrants from obtaining driver’s licenses, which then bans them from purchasing vehicle insurance.  So, the U.S. Government’s practice of putting people in danger, either by forcing uninsured drivers on the street or banning people from preventive health care, continues.

Once health care passes, if the blue dogs get in line, then the debate (and Republican (and blue dog)  posturing) will begin.  The sooner this gets passed, the better it will be for Democrats in November–as will Latino voter participation.

That’s right, I’m calling it!

Now, it’s time for other leaders, such as Mayors of Cities, and other electeds, to back the bill. Heck, maybe a gubernatorial candidate, too!

White Calls for Firm, Alert and Targeted Approach to Violence on Border

Democrat for Texas Governor Bill White seems to have taken a better approach to the violence on the border–he actually talked to someone about it, rather than make a press event about it.  He called on Secretary Napolitano for added resources on the border to assist border law enforcement agencies.

“Secretary Napolitano told me this request would receive serious consideration. She also told me she would give a similar response to the Texas Governor if he talked to her about it, which he has not,” said White.

As governor, Bill White will talk with senior officials in Washington to get things done, as he did throughout his time as Houston’s mayor during both the previous and current administrations.

Secretary Napolitano told White that federal law enforcement agencies were not consulted before Perry’s announcement of a secret plan.

Which goes to show that Rick Perry does not play well with others.  Perhaps he’s still seceding?

While Rick Perry wants to go it alone (as long as the media is around), border law enforcement agencies were left out of the “secret” plan that Perry supposedly rolled out.

White has previously conferred with border law enforcement officials and sought their advice on law enforcement priorities along the border. White has heard from border officials that they were not consulted before Perry’s press announcement that he had “activated” a secret contingency plan.

And while the Republicans use the word “border” as a means of portraying it as “immigration,” Bill White is actually targeting the problem–drug cartel violence.

“Our approach to the tragic violence in Mexico should be firm, alert, and targeted to the precise threat,” White continued. “Competition among drug cartels for territories south of the border has led to escalating violence by groups competing for those territories. The absence of territorial wars on our side of the border and effective local law enforcement has resulted in violent crime rates along the border that are significantly less than in many other parts of the United States.”

But we wouldn’t know that, given that Rick Perry has attempted to politicize the issue, rather than create a solution that goes beyond law enforcement.

White stated, “Exaggerating border violence can undermine economic development efforts of border communities, and that hurts Texas.”

Perry seems to forget that sensationalizing the border violence affects the economy in South Texas.  As the Mayor of the 4th largest city in America, Bill White knew that his decisions affected the areas around Houston–and in some cases, the state and the nation.

Walkers Survive Winter and KKK

I just watched a powerful video about four brave students who are walking 1,500 miles from Miami to Washington, D.C. to demand solutions to our failed immigration system. I’ve signed up to support them as they move into the final leg of their journey. Please watch the video and add your voice too!
