KAD Thanks HSYD

The Houston Stonewall Young Democrats saved the Kingwood Area Democrats! Seeking a pretty awesome photo for their ad for the local Tribune, KAD sought out the organization that developed the best direct mail piece for 2010.

HSYDs piece showcased their endorsed slate in a photo that really shows the diversity of the Democratic Party. And then KAD sent me to beg HSYD for permission to use it.  (Just Kidding!) Actually, HSYD came through showing that our clubs work together toward a common goal–electing a diverse Democratic slate.  And that’s something we in Kingwood aren’t afraid to show ‘em, either.

So, thanks again to HSYD! Here is the KAD finished product.

Rick Perry Pulls A Sharron Angle

Carlos Guerra at NewsTaco asks the question:  Are Latinos the New Gays and Is “Illegal” The New Willie Horton?

Enough race-bating; it is time for some facts.

Here’s my take:

Rick Perry did what pundits did not expect him to do:  Pull a Sharron Angle and run an anti-immigrant ad exploiting a sad situation that occurred a few years ago.

Using the widow of a murdered cop, Perry joined the Republican Party’s game plan of calling Houston a “sanctuary city,” blaming the killing of the cop on a policy to protect Houstonians from racial profiling, while a previously deported felony-convicted immigrant is the only one guilty of murdering the cop.

The problem isn’t an HPD policy which ensures Latinos and others are not racially profiled, it is the lack of political will from Republicans who have done nothing to support comprehensive immigration reform, and have done nothing to make it easier on law enforcement to identify felony criminal aliens by passing a policy that brings hard-working immigrants out of the shadows and flushes  out those who dare commit felonies that threaten all of us.

But for Rick Perry, things are supposed to come easy–his lack of oversight of DPS policies that erased the felony records of deported individuals caused a lot more harm in this case. But the easy way out is to bring negativity to an international economic hub like Houston and instead call for racially profiling Latinos.

That’s what this is about, ultimately. The vilifying of a group of people for political purposes. As Perry has failed to do anything about drug cartels using our highways to deliver to customers in ten years, he instead chooses the tough talk with no action approach that has gotten him re-elected over and over again.

Latinos need to show Rick Perry that he will not win by stomping on our necks for his own political career. VOTE!

Vote Joe Montemayor for HD-127!

El Encabronado – My Voting Experience

So, I arrive at Ripley House very encabronado and ready to vote and turn my VR card into a defense weapon. I thought I’d play it smart, avoid the push card gauntlet and  park on the other side–there were signs telling one where to go vote.  The problem?  The doors on that side were all locked!

Luckily, someone saw me and pushed the door open and I was in the building! The nice guy at the front desk directed me to the voting room–thanks, nice guy!

So, I walk in and the election staff was very nice and welcoming. The whole room was basically seated, so it took me a few seconds to realize who made up the voter intimidation team. They were at either end of the table and both had what were probably their Voter Intimidation and Waterboarding Training manuals provided by the Teabagger group.

After a few seconds, one of them stands up and hovers behind the staff who is checking the voters in. Within seconds, I sign the sheet, get my voter code and am sent to the E-Slate, which now have tents (instead of the plastic wings) to hide how you’re voting.

I picked my E-Slate (#3 on the pink side) and got to doing my duty, but I kept an eye on what they were doing as a few folks had walked in and the other intimidation team member stood up. So, being the avid voter that I am, I easily click Straight Democratic Ticket…but instead of clicking “next” to get to the last page faster, I used the dial and toggled over and and over and over again. It was loud enough to make one of the intimidation team members lose concentration and not hover as much.

After checking my picks, I waited a few more seconds and hit “Cast Ballot.” Took a deep breath, and walked toward the door. The intimidator dude was looking at me, so I shot off one of my “looks of death” at him (see inset), and usually, Teabaggers can’t look you in the eye when they are intimidating you, so of course, he looked away.

The cheery election staff made sure to thank me for voting, I made sure I thanked them serving our community (as I always do), and I went my merry way.

And that was my 2010 Voting Experience.

In other words…don’t let a few stares or some hovering by people who don’t want you to vote stop you from voting. VOTE TODAY! AND VOTE DEMOCRATIC BECAUSE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

Molina Slams Legler on Worker Safety Record

Get ‘im, Mr. Molina! (Rick Molina has been a DC favorite for a long time!)

Rick Molina criticizes Ken Legler’s poor record on worker safety

PASADENA- Today, Rick Molina, candidate for State Representative in House District 144, criticized State Representative Ken Legler on his poor record on worker safety issues.

Revelations about worker safety citations at his company, Houston Wire Works, follow criticism over Ken Legler’s decision to outsource 59 manufacturing jobs at his business to Mexico and China.1

Between 1990 and 1995 Ken Legler was also cited over 29 times for serious safety violations at Houston Wire Works by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).2 Additionally, Legler settled three different lawsuits filed against him by employees for workplace injuries.

Molina said, “Ken Legler talks like a pro-business conservative.  But he hasn’t supported the hard working people who make companies successful.  Rather than fix the problems at his company, Ken Legler took the easy way out by shipping the jobs to China.”

During the 81st Legislative session, Representative Legler also cast the deciding vote against HB 1657 which would have undone a Texas Supreme Court decision that caps the amount that a worker can recover when injured on the job.  The bill failed the House by one vote, 71-73. 3 The court decision and bill stem from a 1995 explosion at the Texas City refinery of British Petroleum (BP) where fifteen workers were killed and hundreds more were burned and injured.  BP paid millions of dollars in fines and over a billion dollars to the workers and families that were impacted.

“We simply cannot have a person in the State Legislature with a failed record on worker safety casting votes on work safety laws.  It’s like having an ex-convict  creating sentencing guidelines.  Workers here take enormous risks to keep vital parts of our economy moving strong. When it comes to the health and safety of workers, companies shouldn’t take shortcuts and I’ll stand with workers to make sure that companies honor their promises to them.”  Molina said.

——————————————————————-

Rick Molina, the son of railroad worker and homemaker, grew up in Pasadena and Houston. The first person in his family to go to college, he holds degrees from Rice University and the University of Houston Law School.

A former prosecutor, Molina now has his own practice, the Molina Law Firm. He is vice chair of the Hispanic Business Council in the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, where he supports and promotes local businesses and encourages economic development.

The father of two young children, Rick will make job creation and economic development a top priority in the next legislative session.

JULIET KATHY STIPECHE ANNOUNCES ENDORSEMENTS IN HISD-8 RACE

As we reach Early Voting Weekend, Juliet Kathy Stipeche, candidate for Houston ISD Trustee – District 8, is pleased to announce endorsements, to date, from major organizations representative of the community, including the Houston Federation of Teachers, Mexican American Sheriff’s Organization, Houston GLBT Political Caucus PAC, and the Houston Organization of Spanish Speaking Officers.

“I am pleased to have earned the trust of our district’s teachers,” said Stipeche, “Our teachers deserve to be treated with respect and fairness as they are on the front lines of creating the next generation of community leaders. As a community, we must all work together to ensure the next generation is well-prepared.”

Gayle Fallon, president of HFT, stated that Juliet is a product of the district’s schools and that she impressed teachers with her willingness to put aside teacher bashing and silver bullet approaches to education reform in favor of seeking real solutions from the teachers and parents who deal with urban problems on a daily basis.

“Juliet is about fixing our schools – not selling pieces of HISD to a few charter interests. She is about collaboration and real solutions – not scapegoating our teachers,” concluded Fallon.

With numerous teen suicides making the news, the issue of bullying in the schools has come to the forefront. The Houston ISD board needs members who will serve as liaisons with community organizations, including groups like the Houston GLBT Political Caucus, with the expertise to develop, promote and enforce strict anti-bullying policies.

“The GLBT community has so much at stake in our schools,” said Kris Banks, President of the Houston GLBT Political Caucus.  “GLBT students deserve protection from bullying at schools. GLBT teachers and school administrators deserve safeguards so they can continue their calling. And GLBT parents deserve good neighborhood schools to send their children to.”

Added Stipeche, “It is grassroots community groups like The Caucus who can help us develop policies, as well as provide outreach to inform the community of such policies. I look forward to working with The Caucus on these issues.”  If elected, Juliet also plans to work with the Human Rights Campaign’s Welcoming Schools Program, GLSEN, and HATCH.

Stipeche is also proud to have earned the support of local law enforcement groups which serve the District 8 community.

Stated Stipeche, “I am committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, teachers, parents, and others who utilize our facilities.  Creating relationships with key groups, such as MASO and OSSO, will help bring together the law enforcement community to address the safety concerns of our district and surrounding neighborhoods.”

Early Voting continues through October 29, 2010.  Election Day is on November 2. Polling locations may be found at www.HarrisVotes.org.

Thoughts on Viernes…10222010

DosCentavos WORLD HQ

Yes, it’s about time I get out of my mom’s basement, replace the cheetos-stained underoos that we get accused of wearing and get an office space.  Actually, after officing out of home out in what feels like the ‘bagger ‘burbs lately, I decided that I needed a bricks-and-mortar facility in the big city from which to run things for clients, as well as comfortably blog and write. So, DCMedia will also be known as the DosCentavos World Headquarters.  Stay tuned for information on the grand opening of my little closet, I mean, office.

THE TEABAGGER POLL TRAINING IS WORKING

What do you do when accused of intimidating voters? You accuse the voters of harrassing them! What page of the Republican Voter Intimidation and Waterboarding Training Manual is that on, Jared?

Yes,these Teabaggers have no shame and figure the Republican DA will be on their side by filing their own accusations against minority voters–the very voters they have been whining about and crying “fraud” about for years.

Bravo, RepubliBaggers, you are proving you are as anti-Constitution as we know you are!  I mean, why else would you whine about minority voters?

WHAT’s THE DIFFERENCE?

The Texas Attorney General is going after some home school diploma mills? Home schools in Texas have no oversight, so I’m wondering–how did they know the accused were diploma mills?

JUAN, JUAN, JUAN…

So, Juan Williams get fired by NPR for saying he fears Muslims because they are basically fully engaged in their Muslim-ness by wearing the garb, etc.  Good! I wonder if DosCentavos.net will fire me for saying Teabaggers look like Timothy McVeigh and they scare me. (Thanks, you know who!)

FINALLY–A GOOD USE FOR THE DOME!

No, not the Astrodome, my favorite dome in Texas–the Alamodome! The UTSA Paisanos football team will be housed there for at least five years. Given San Antonio’s love of football, I expect some good crowds and some good dividends all around.  And it will especially be a great venue for the I-35 Classic between them and Texas State!

DOING THAT VOTING THING

The Medellin Cartel-Houston Branch will be voting on Saturday at an undisclosed location. Hopefully, I will be hovered upon, questioned about my citizenship, or just plain given a weird stare by a Teabagger. I’ll have my Cristal/Raza Unida Party attitude with me, too.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND FOLKS!

Harris County Could Add Chapter to Tea Party Report

There’s a new report on the Tea Party movement‘s racist nature.

Tea Party Nationalism is a new report by Devin Burghart, Leonard Zeskind and the Institute for Research & Education on Human Rights that exposes the connection between numerous Tea Party leaders and racism.

At TeaPartyTracker.com you’ve seen the examples of racism at Tea Party events and rallies. Tea Party Nationalism digs even deeper into the histories of Tea Party leaders around the country, and the results are shocking.

This week, it seems Harris County could write a whole new chapter to this report as the Teapers put their attitude into practice at polling locations.  Rachel Maddow also had a good report on the Tea Party goings on regarding poll watchers across the U.S. (Some “birther” is calling the shots in Illinois, which says much about these poll watchers.)

VOTE DEMOCRATIC BECAUSE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

¡SI NO VOTAS…NO VALES!
