Romney’s Grand Plan and his Keep Dreamin’ Act

Our friends at Latino Rebels posted Mitt Romney’s grand plan for immigration. Just as expected, he mentions nothing about the 12 million undocumented folks already here, but the Keep Dreamin’ act part of the plan leaves much to be desired.

America should keep the best and the brightest here in the United States. Every foreign student who obtains an advanced degree in math, science, or engineering at a U.S. university should be granted permanent residency.

“Foreign student” tells me he will never support in-state tuition for undocumented kids who have lived here. That’s the key to higher education success for many of these students–affordability and access. And “permanent residency” means none will become citizens.

Of course, if you really want to become a citizen, you could always die for him.

Mitt Romney believes that young illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children should have the chance to become permanent residents, and eventually citizens, by serving honorably in the United States military.

The rest of his grand plan is all about temporary workers, i.e., just another Bracero Program which will suck the working life out of immigrants and send them home without Social Security benefits or much else.

Of course, he still wants that dumb fence.

His message at NALEO today, ultimately, is to Keep Dreamin’. That’s all we will get out of President Obama’s opponent.
