Our 2008 Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Col. Rick Noriega and Houston City Council Member Melissa Noriega has endorsed Bill White for Texas Governor. Here’s his statement:
Electing a Governor is not about friendship, it is about leadership. Bill White is my friend, but more importantly, he is what Texas needs today–a true leader.
I have served with, and for, many a real leader. Whether in a war zone, in the legislature, in business, Or even in our neighborhood, we know it when we see it, don’t we? Leadership is not about being a peacock when things are good, but rather leadership is about the actions and character of a person in the face of adversity.
I had just returned home from my year-long tour in Afghanistan when Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana. Methodically, decisively the leadership qualities of Bill White went to work. He called and asked me to help support his great team at the George R. Brown Convention Center as busloads of cold, wet evacuees arrived. It was an honor to once again serve fellow Americans, and our great city of Houston.
Even more, I respected Bill as the great leader he is, that morning during this crisis that he was asked to address the congregation at Second Baptist Church. I don’t know when I had ever been more proud as a Texan and Houstonian.
Bill White talked about Houston as an example, that Biblical “City on the Hill;” that “light that guided the way”. Bill said that it was our moral responsibility and yes, our calling, to be our “brothers keeper.”
To me, true leaders serve. At a time in our state that when we are at the bottom of almost every social metric–the least educated, least insured, lowest wage earners; the highest dropouts, highest teen pregnancy rate, most polluters, just to name a few…it is time Texans demanded true leadership; especially in these critical times.
As a fourth generation Texan, I want my family to support a candidate who can make a difference, for a better future for my children, for all our children. Someone who can lead Texas toward her full potential.
Bill White is that candidate.That time is now.
That’s why I ask you to join Melissa and me, and our family, together, in supporting my friend, Bill White, our next governor of the great state of Texas.
