Taking a Look at Houston City Races

Thanks to Kuff and to the Erik Manning spreadsheet, we now have a better view of the City of Houston races for City Council–at least when it comes to money. Me, though, I tend to look at my favorite candidates first. So, here are my reactions.

I don’t have a favorite candidate in At-Large 1. Given my personal disconnection to local politics–mostly due to COVID and unmasked beings in mass attendance–I haven’t really gotten to meet candidates. And I don’t seem to get many asks in emails and social media. That said, Leah Wolfthal has gotten my attention recently and I’ve seen the Miles signs in my area of town; both are raising some cash.

Holly Flynn-Vilaseca is my favorite candidate in At-Large 2. Don’t believe me? I’m on the list of contributors! So, I was very happy to find out that she had a pretty impressive haul and cash on hand total in her first report. Her list of endorsements includes quite the group of progressive-minded folks who serve the people well.

Richard Cantu is my candidate in At-Large 3 and he’s got some cash. Don’t know who the big money republican is, but that’s probably because she’s a big money republican. So, give to Cantu! Side-note: Yes, she has name rec, but I expected more from Casey Curry, though, she is showing up to events and pressing the flesh.

Letitia Plummer in At-Large 4 I’ve supported since her first race and she’s doing alright but could do better since she’s an incumbent. Then, again, selling your soul isn’t a good look. That Ol’ Roy is still politically alive is not necessarily worrisome but gives me the willies.

For City Controller, I’m Chris Hollins all the way and he’s got the cash to win.

In my own District F, it seems incumbent Tiffany Thomas is unopposed.

My friend in District I, Joaquin Martinez, is racking up endorsements and some good cash to become the next CM. I know he’s not taking anything for granted and will earn every vote.

In District H, there seems to be a horse race. My fave at the moment is Mario Castillo. I am buying extra boxes of popcorn, just in case.

And speaking of selling your soul, the amount of money the incumbent in District J has raised is ridiculous, considering it is such a low turnout district. Let’s hope Ivan Sanchez gets that report in.

Finally, for Mayor, I’m glad that Robert Gallegos raised some money. When it comes down to it, he’s my favorite for various reasons: Experience, Latino, and showed up to my Mom’s memorial service. (Some things you just never forget.) Coming in second is Sheila Jackson Lee. The Congresswoman represents my issues better than most members of Congress. I’d only ask either one: Will you support one another in a run-off (if either of you do not make it and the other does)? Because the big money guys do not impress me.

Anyway, those are my reactions. There will be more as things progress.
